℣ +Our help is in the name of the Lord.

℟ Who hath made heaven and earth.

The following Scripture is read: Isaiah 11.1-10

THERE shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. Righteousness shall be the girdle of his waist, and faithfulness the girdle of his loins. The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall feed; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The sucking child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

Light the first and second purple candles in order. With hands joined, the leader prays:

STIR up our hearts, O Lord, to prepare the ways of thine Only-Begotten Son: that through his advent we may be worthy to serve thee with purified minds; through the same Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. ℟ Amen.

The devotion may conclude with a verse from "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel": 

O come, thou Branch of Jesse’s tree, free them from Satan’s tyranny
that trust thy mighty power to save, and give them victory o’er the grave.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel 
shall come to thee, O Israel.

O God, by whose word all things are sanctified, pour forth Thy blessing upon this wreath, and grant that we who use it may prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ and may receive from Thee abundant graces. Through Christ our Lord. ℟ Amen.

The following Scriptures are read:

Ps 50.2-5

Out of Sion hath God appeared * in perfect beauty.

Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence; * there shall go before him a consuming fire, and a mighty tempest shall be stirred up round about him.

He shall call the heaven from above, * and the earth, that he may judge his people.

Gather my saints together unto me; * those that have made a covenant with me with sacrifice.

John 1.1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Light one purple candle. With hands joined, the leader prays:

ALMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty, to judge both the quick and the dead; we may rise to the life immortal; through the same Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. ℟ Amen.

Opening prayers

1. On the large beads, recite:
Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of your dearly beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

Prayers in time of Spiritual Turbulence

October 7, which falls on Sunday this year, is the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, which commemorates victory of the Holy League over invading Turks at the Battle of Lepanto. Pope St Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, after a campaign for the faithful throughout Europe to pray the rosary on the day of the battle. 

Pope Francis has asked all the faithful in this time of "spiritual turbulence" to pray the rosary daily during the month of October, and also the Marian prayer Sub tuum praesidium and the St Michael the Archangel prayer.

• How to recite the Rosary (pdf).

• Sub Tuum Praesidium: We fly to Thy protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.

• Prayer to St. Michael: Saint Michael Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Beginning this Sunday and through Advent, at the conclusion of Mass, and in place of the Last Gospel, we will pray the Leonine Prayers for the protection of the Church in this time of scandal.

℣ Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. 
℟ Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. (3x)

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee to we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Mass Intentions

It is the ancient tradition of the Church that priests may apply the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for a particular intention of the faithful and receive an offering for doing so. The intentions are usually for the sick, the faithful departed, or in gratitude for some blessing received. On Sundays and Holy Days, at least one parish Mass must be offered pro populo – that is, for the intentions of all the people of the parish. Now that we have weekday Mass established in conjunction with St Mary's, you may have one of these Masses offered for your intentions.

In both the Diocese of Charleston and the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter (for Corpus Christi), the suggested donation for a Mass is $10.

One part of Catholic culture that is sometimes hard to understand and very often misunderstood is the custom of offering Mass intentions.

When a priest celebrates Mass each day, he offers each celebration of the Eucharist for a particular person, or intention. By doing so he applies special graces from God upon that person or intention.

Similar to how we are able to intercede for others by our personal prayers, the Church is able to intercede for us through the celebration of the Mass. However, since the Eucharist is the “source and summit of the Christian life” the Mass possess a power that our personal prayers do not.

The practice of offering Mass for particular intentions is an ancient one, dating back to the early Church.
